Pony Express Lives On
Once upon a time, not so long ago – this region was filled with cowboys, ranch hands, heaps of cattle and the mail was delivered on horseback via the Pony Express.
The Clear Creek Cowboy Association is ensuring that the history and education of the Western Way of Life, doesn’t disappear forever. They have actively been volunteering time at fairs and rodeo’s as well as youth and community service organizations, here in Winslow and around the State. One way they are keeping the heritage of the region alive, is with the upcoming inaugural Clear Creek Cowboys “Territorial Road” Pony Express Ride!
Setting off from the Winslow Post Office this January 29th at 9:30 am – heading South on 87, to Hwy 99, along the territorial road to Holbrook, returning to Winslow by 2pm, where you can watch the riders cross the finish line at Tom’s Tavern. This fun filled; family event also includes the option of purchasing a postcard for $1 (plus postage) from the Winslow Chamber of Commerce to be mailed via Pony Express - participating in the cowboy ways of our regional history.
For some additional one on one time, come on by the Winslow Chamber of Commerce for a meet and greet of the riders, January 27th at noon. The Postmaster of the Winslow Post Office will be swearing in the pony express riders and afterwards, there will be a “mock ride” or hand off demonstration, at 1:30 in front of La Posada on 2nd Street. With lots of sunshine and temps expected to be hovering around 60 degrees, this is an ideal family educational experience on a winters day in Northern Arizona.
Be sure to check out the community calendar found on www.whynotwinslow.com for all sorts of fun local events and inspirational gatherings.
