How do rural communities “talk” to each other during the high-tech world of the 21st century, of which we all live? Many still use the front stoop to chat with neighbors and those wandering by; others choose the local coffee shop to engage with other like-minded souls for hours on end. There are options like church on Sunday or ball games during the week, certainly a local paper, such as the Tribune, contributes to conveying information about the region, in a succinct and regular schedule.
The afore mentioned options work as well today, as they did 50 years ago, and I assume will continue to be a valuable source of engagement for many decades to come. Globally, we are now also able to connect via the world wide web, with a variety of social media channels in addition to smart devices which let us not only make calls but send messages faster than you can say “iphone”.
For us here in Northeastern Arizona, we have yet another option = Good Morning Winslow. Held the first Wednesday of every month. This is a free event where everyone is welcome, not just those who reside within the city limits, but from anywhere. Each month brings a new speaker, and ANYone can take a moment to make announcements or ask questions. It is a great place to feel the pulse of the community, to learn about events and happenings, as well as make personal connections to those whom you would like to meet or have never had a chance to be introduced. Coffee and light refreshments are always served. Beginning at 7 am and ending promptly by 8, at the Winslow Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, located directly on Route 66. June 1st brings the Navajo County Health Department, sure to be a superb presentation and update on county wide initiatives. We hope to see you there!
